Horncastle & British Earthquake 2nd Anniversary
Belmont Tv Towerwiki The racecourse town of Market Rasen found itself close to the epicentre of a 5.2 quake Feb 27th 2008, the local paper not really doing justice to the event. Not that there's that much to damage in the town. It was felt nationally with damage levels just below an emergency response. The Belmont Tv tower was perhaps the true center, but nothing was mentioned of the highest tower in Europe. It's 10 miles North of me at the head of the Bain valley in which Horncastle is situated, about 10 miles west of the 'UFO' incidents. The whole area is as mad as a goldfish in summer with schools of bikers travelling at 3 figure speeds to the International Racing circuit at Cadwell Park, in amongst the holiday caravanners and balloon tyre tractors of Lincolnshire. The tremor itself literally kept my cottage in the air for 10 seconds. Worrying bits of masonry and flashing could be heard dancing down the roof from the chimneys and the taller house next door. . The next few days the roads were chicanes around ladder trucks removing unsafe chimney pots. It occurred close to 2am, so I was expecting it to be a precursor to a large quake at sunrise. In the week preceding there had been a lunar eclipse. A spoof 'news' report had been making the rounds of the internet just prior to the real wake up call. Update from Grimsby News remembering. Update: Chimney restoration work 01/04/09 ongoing on the 16ft monolith over my cottage in Horncastle. Luckily I'm a renter....Neighbours weren't so lucky. Officially Horncastle recieved little damage, but one storey of scaffold costs £1,000 per week.... New Moon after Eclipses - Mountain Quakes?
The Sun and Moon operating in the sky together are a mighty force that cause problems to industry from fishing tides to supersonic aircraft machine shops - where the jigs can be millimetres out of line from fortnight to fortnight. The two heavenly bodies still pull at faults, but seem to act more strongly on mountains, sea mounts and Capes & promontories. It doesn't often take much of a tremor to cause a landslip, or undersea slide leading to a tsunami - one taking Cape Town by surprise in the summer of '08 after a small rumble on the Indian Ridge. This is the USA's main worry with the Canarias volcano flank across the Atlantic, waiting to slump into the sea. Thus it is that China's South West hills recorded more fatalities after a tremor measuring only 3.5R, as landslides filled inhabited valleys. In the same tectonic area, Bangladesh glowing ominously on infra-red. Authorities only too aware Dhaka is another Port au Prince waiting to happen... The main Mexico temblor from yesterday (there's been several approaching 5.0), causing tower blocks to shake in Mexico City, with 'no major damage'... |

Post Perigee Quakes 2010
With the closest approach of the Moon, a little lull in major quakes ending with a 6.5 at the Solomon Islands deep in the Solomon Sea. Happening at Near Full Moonset & Sunrise, it has 'awoken' the Java Trench from it's recent quiet spell, and quakes in excess of 5.0 are rumbling across the whole of Southern Indonesia. Iran, at the business end of the Indonesian thrust, starting to show up on Infra Red, whilst Quetta in Pakistan does it more visibly, with a Volcano reawakened. Arunchal, India having strange phenomena too, not seen since 2007 (just prior to the Sichuan Quake...), whilst Azerbaijan mud volcanoes erupting show the width of the Indonesian push. At the other end a volcano eruption and 6.6 quake South of Japan show the pressures involved between the tectonic plates. Elsewhere, the tremors in the Americas continuing, but struggling to reach 5.0 Richter, whilst as usual, the Philipines do similar. It almost seems to be a harmonic echo between the two Pacific areas, with any space made north of Indonesia being taken up by the Americas. The USA snows continuing and breaking East Coast records as a third of a million lose electric. Pictures In Haiti, The President confirming 200,000 dead, with as many treated for injuries, the total quickly reaching 212,000 later in the week; the term 'amputee generation' being mentioned. Many of the trapped with crush injuries suffer kidney failiure soon after release as the rush of toxic blood is allowed away from the injury - an article showing that even a couple of paracetomol may help victims survive. The Eureka / Cape Mendocino area having another earthquake just off the coast, arriving at Noon and Moonset, which may point to magma movement even far from the Cascade ranges. As New Moon approaches again, it is more liable to be sea mounts and mountain faults that react, rather than slip faults that open to opposing pulls. Registering close to 6.0, hardly any property damaged caused this time, compared to the $Millions last month. A couple of days later, just prior to New Moon, and Mexico gets a quake that has been building since December. At around 6.0 Richter it may have been powerful enough to cause more mayhem, with 33 dead already due to floods. I'm not sure if this is THE quake that will be in response to the dozen or so at Haiti; the area is capable of biblical movement, as was shown by the '85 quake just off the SW coast that wrecked parts of the Capitol. With the Sea Lions hauling ass to hotter tropical Peru, the area (like San Francisco) could be in for major rumbles. In Ireland, a fireball spotted falling to Earth, again around 53North, as so many were last year. The Andaman Islands loses it's last Native Bo speaker and 'the richest epitomy of wholesome humanity', as Trunk roads and dis ease finally wiped the last members of a 70,000 year old tribe off the face of the Earth. |
